| Description: | Welcome to Solstice. We are a residential treatment program for girls ages 14-17, located just north of Salt Lake City, UT. We believe that relationships are at the core of any therapeutic intervention and to that end, we only accommodate up to 36 students so that each girl is given individual attention and the opportunity to build authentic, meaningful relationships. All students are enrolled in academic studies, participate in individual, family, group, and equine assisted psychotherapy, and enter a daily yoga practice. In addition, we offer a holistic treatment approach with medication management, physical fitness, recreational activities, community service opportunities, an organic and whole foods diet, and wellness education. |

| Enroll Info: | Parents will be asked to complete an application including clinical information, and treatment histories on their daughter. This information will be used by the Admission's team, including Clinical, Admissions, Program, and Academic directors, to determine if your daughter is appropriate for our program. If you have questions about the program, or would like more information in the process of determining if your daughter is appropriate for Solstice RTC, please call our Admissions Director, Dr. Kyle Gillett at (801) 444-0794. |
| Student Profile: | Admissions At Solstice we have a selective admissions process. This is done in an effort to ensure that the girls we accept into our program are appropriate for the level of care we provide, that our program and your daughter are a good fit for one another, and that we can provide the services that your daughter requires in order to progress successfully. We specialize in working with girls age 14 -17 yrs old who struggle with a variety of problems such as; depression, anxiety, body image issues, substance abuse, mild eating disorders, self-harm, suicidal ideation, non-compliance, family conflict, grief and loss, adoption issues, low self-esteem, academic struggles, ADHD, abuse and trauma issues, academic struggles, processing difficulties such as NLD and Aspergers disorder, and other social issues. Although we specialize in working with girls that struggle with these issues, not every girl that has these issues is a good fit for Solstice. Our Admissions director will help you through the process of determining whether we would be a good fit for your daughter. It may be helpful to know that girls that we will not be able to serve effectively include those who: * Have a history of physical aggression; or a diagnosis of Conduct disorder * Are acutely suicidal, or present a high risk of serious danger to themselves, or others; * Are experiencing psychosis, or impaired reality testing, * Have an overall IQ score lower than 90, * Are medically unstable. |
| Academics: | Academics are an important and crucial component of Solstice’s approach. We understand that a student’s ability to learn, retain, and apply new information will have an impact on the rest of her life. Our educational philosophy is based on a student-centered learning approach. Many of the students who come to Samaya have struggled in the academic arena despite the fact that they are gifted, capable students who have the ability to excel at a much higher level. This often has resulted in a student’s belief that she is incapable and unintelligent, damaging her self-concept. Samaya knows that self efficacy and self-esteem are greatly affected by a student’s academic experience. Our goal then is to have each student experience success in the classroom. Therefore, it is important to us that the individual’s strengths and weaknesses are considered when creating an academic plan. Upon admission, each student’s academic record is evaluated and an academic plan is created in order to ensure that each student has the ability to make up missing credits and continue in academic instruction. Samaya’s academic program operates year-round so that students can receive remedial help, make-up credits they missed in their home schools, earn credits toward graduation, take college preparation coursework, and prepare for the ACT and SAT tests. All credits earned can be transferred back to your student’s high school, or she may graduate with a high school diploma from our school. For students that are near high school completion, they can pursue college course work through one of the many colleges and universities in our area. Class time is structured by beginning with a course lecture, followed by quiet study time for course work. During this time, students work individually while tutors and instructors are available for consultation. The program’s goal is always core mastery of subjects. Class sizes are ten students or less so that every student receives individualized attention. Besides the direct instruction and independent work, study hours are regularly scheduled throughout the week. In addition to classroom courses, students earn high school credits through both the EAP program and the Physical Fitness training. Academic curriculum includes: * Mathematics: Applied Math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus * Science: Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Physics * Social Studies: Geography, World Civilization, U.S. History, U.S. Government, Civics * Language Arts * Foreign Languages: French, Spanish * Physical Education * Health * Fine Arts * Life Management * Financial Literacy * Applied Technology * Electives |
| Activities: | If you could go anywhere in the United States to recreate, it would be difficult to find a better place to go than Utah. We are surrounded by the Wasatch Mountains which boast some of the best skiing/snowboarding, hiking, rock climbing, and biking in the world. We are close to many national parks such as Yellowstone, Zions, Arches, Canyonlands, Bryce Canyon , and Grand Teton, just to name a few. At Samaya we believe that recreation is important to individual development and offers students opportunities to experience themselves differently and learn and grow in body, mind, and spirit. Samaya also has ownership in a fly fishing lodge called Falcon's Ledge, just two hours east of Salt Lake City, that we use for both relaxation and experiential education. The Samaya campus is also located just |
| Counseling: | Look at any research, and you will find that above and beyond any therapy modality used, relationships are at the heart of therapy. As you browse our site you will see that we reference some of the modalities we use. Many are evidence-based and what are considered “best-practices”, i.e. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Rational Emotive Therapy (RET), Motivational Interviewing, Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), etc. However, to be effective in any of these practices, Samaya understands that first and foremost, the relationship and rapport developed between the therapist and student is essential. Therefore, we use a relationship-based model in a family style living setting with ample opportunities for one on one interaction on a therapeutic level. Because we are a small residential treatment center , we are able to individualize treatment specifically to meet the needs of your student. We believe that problems are systemic and develop due to an inability of the adolescent to cope with or manage stress that might arise from a traumatic event; family issues, adoption, poor peer relations, or academic and learning disabilities etc. We believe that often symptoms are in fact the adolescent’s best attempt at solving the initial problem. Negative interaction facilitates a negative experience (i.e. conflict) and is associated with the potential for negative beliefs about the system or self (shame). At Samaya, we have a multi-systemic approach to helping with your child’s issues that includes individual therapy, family therapy, equine assisted psychotherapy, experiential learning, psychotherapeutic process groups, milieu, and team groups. At Samaya, students learn to transcend their problems by accepting them and learn how to confront their limiting beliefs and attitudes through a strengths-based approach that supports and encourages confidence and competence. Due to our comprehensive style, we at Samaya are able to address and adapt to the unique needs and characteristics of your child. Our Therapists are at the Masters or Ph.D. level, and have several years of experience working in residential, outpatient and wilderness therapy settings. | Campus: | Solstice is located in Layton, UT, just 20 minutes north of downtown Salt Lake City, and is nestled in the valley between the Wasatch Mountains and the Great Salt Lake. Our facility is 19,000 square feet, sitting on 2 ½ acres, and is adjacent to a golf course, elementary school, large city park, and a conservation easement. The lodge where the girls sleep is formerly a beautiful log-cabin style bed and breakfast that housed many country western stars and other celebrities on their visits to Utah. The lodge is in a small and safe community, just minutes from shopping, restaurants, churches and schools. We are centrally located with quick access to downhill skiing, road and mountain biking, art galleries and studios, waterskiing, bird watching and sight seeing. |
| Family Involvement: | Solstice believes that family involvement is essential in each student’s treatment from admission to discharge. Family therapy will be conducted via teleconferencing weekly at the outset and may taper to bi-weekly sessions based on student and family needs. In addition, students will have weekly social calls with their parents, the number of calls being determined according to the step she is on. We encourage families to set up routine visits with the coordination and consent of the primary therapist every few months. We also expect families to be involved in our family weekend workshops a minimum of two times during your student’s length of stay. |
| Length of Stay: | 10-12 months |
| Philosophy: | When we accept that what limits us are the boundaries we have created for ourselves, it is then that we enter the sacred bondage of Solstice. It is with this principle that we take a strengths-based approach and believe that even with life’s difficulties, within each one of us is the ability to transcend this and face life with awareness and intention. In this vein, we offer a holistic approach to treatment, believing that having strength in all of our program components is essential to the growth of students. We offer a daily yoga practice to our students in order to incite the journey into self-awareness, clinical treatment in the form of individual, family, and group therapy, as well as milieu and equine assisted psychotherapy. In addition to this, our students receive accredited academic classes, medication management, recreational therapy, physical fitness, wellness education, and a nutritional, organic diet. Our vision is: To create a sacred space for young women to commit to willingly enter fully into life and relationships through self-awareness rather than self-centeredness, intention rather than |
