The 318 acre boys program and 150 acre girls program are located on separate campuses in central Virginia. | Student Profile: | Referred students have frequently been described as being immature, impulsive, angry, and oppositional. Often our students have experienced failure in the traditional school setting. Due to their poor coping skills, students typically have a number of unresolved emotional and family issues; however, despite their difficulties, they are able to learn to form supportive relationships and grow within the group setting provided at the school. |
| Academics: | The Discovery School of Virginia is a fully accredited secondary school, offering middle school and high school credit classes, as well as special education, remedial, and GED preparatory classes. The Discovery School of Virginia for Girls offers middle school and high school credit classes, as well as special education, remedial, and GED prepartory classes. In the formal school, small class size and individualized instruction encourage students to progress rapidly through material in which they exhibit strength, and to spend extra time in areas where they show trouble attaining mastery. |
| Activities: | While offering traditional recreational activities including basketball, football, soccer, softball, volleyball, swimming, bowling, and skating, the Schools also offer opportunities for students to plan extensive recreational adventure trips and outdoor activities such as backpacking, canoeing, caving, or bicycling. The Schools also provide opportunities to participate in community, social, and cultural activities on a weekly basis and to plan special outings to museums, historical sites, and other areas of interest, such as zoos, aquariums, colleges, local industries or state parks |

| Philosophy: | The boys and girls programs operate on separate campuses in central Virginia. The boys campus consists of 318 acres while the girls campus located on 150 acres. The Discovery Schools use a group problem solving process and the natural environment to promote a student's overall positive development. Each student is assigned to a group that includes ten students, two adult group leaders, and a supervisor. Each group lives in a rustic campsite village comprised of 8-10 cabin-sized tents, which the students design, maintain, and replace as needed. |
