Shelterwood is a fully accredited, treatment-oriented boarding school for troubled teens designed to help boys and girls who are failing in school, at home, or within the community. Our tuition is far lower than the national average for therapeutic boarding schools because we are partially supported by donations.
We are uniquely equipped to help struggling adolescents who are spiralling out of control and showing signs of: Depression, anger, substance abuse, academic failure, low motivation, conflict with authority and poor peer choices.
Advance Ed accredited. We educate our students right on campus with certified teachers. From our science and computer labs to our gymnasium, swimming pool and dorm lounges, our students have an opportunity to explore and expand their various talents.
We have a wide variety of sporting opportunities through the use of our outdoor courts, gymnasium, swimming pool, low ropes course, and horse program.
Shelterwood provides individual, group, and family counselling for at-risk youth
Located in Independence, Missouri, the Shelterwood campus was designed from the ground up to treat the whole child. From our beautiful gymnasium, to our classrooms, dorms, and counseling offices, we believe that you will find a highly professional environment with all the necessary amenities. It is important for families to know their children will receive the love, care and attention they deserve even while going through a treatment program..
Families participate in biweekly family therapy sessions, two on-campus retreat weekends, and are free to visit their kids on campus.
Shelterwood" is a forestry technique whereby certain trees, which cannot tolerate the intensity of the sun, are sheltered on the forest floor by older, more mature trees until they can stand and grow on their own. In the same way, Shelterwood provides a place where teens can be sheltered from the intensity of their adolescence while breaking down barriers within the family so that they can be reunited in a new atmosphere in the home.
Our ministry began "sheltering" teens in 1980 when a father approached Richard Beach founder of Doulos Ministries, looking for an alternative for his daughter who was headed down a very self-destructing path. The Lord provided a mentor, a counselor and a new option for this young lady when she came to live with a LeadTime student as the first Shelterwood resident.
Over 27 years later, Shelterwood is still on course, having served 940 families since 1982. We operate two campuses: a beautiful 20-acre wooded property outside of Branson, MO and 40 acres near the foothills of the Rocky Mountains near Denver, CO. A non-profit, faith-based organization, Shelterwood is a licensed by the Residential Child Care Agencies (RCCF) and the Colorado and Missouri State's Division of Family Services.
We typically have a one to one staff to student ratio
ommunity Service & Mission Trips: Shelterwood teens serve one another, serve the community and learn to serve the world. Through work projects on campus, your teen will pick up valuable work/life skills and understand teamwork to accomplish a task. Your child will also participate in "Beyond Shelterwood" days which are both academic field trips and community service trips.
We serve at local shelters, churches, and various places in the community. Shelterwood also offers teens an opportunity to build homes and care for orphans in Haiti. Your teen will experience a great amount of healing from living beyond him or herself
