Our program provides a supervised structured environment combining counseling, positive reinforcement, independent living, goal planning, job skills, schooling and outdoor activities. Our program is designed to treat each student as an individual, and offer support through a community setting. | Academics: | Many of our students here were already enrolled in college or just about on their way. Certain choices they have made have taken them off that track and brought them to us. To help prepare them for better success when they return home, they are able to enroll in some college courses while here with us. This is an additional cost, not covered by our tuition fees. There a few different Outreach College programs offered here locally. This is a great opportunity for those who do not want to fall behind in their educational goals while working on their personal issues. There are several courses and schedules to choose from. Please ask us for more information if interested. Another service we offer at Bonneville Canyon is the availability to complete High School. Many of our students here have not been able to complete their education due to the actions and attitudes of the past. We realize that an education is a vital part of your route to success. The students have a choice of a G.E.D. or finishing high school with a Diploma. Both of these are achieved thorough outside resources and will be at an additional cost from the program tuition. Please contact us for further information. |
| Activities: | Depending upon the season, we have several types of activities. All of our activities are treated as rewards. Not everyone gets to participate in all that we do. They must show progress and be getting along with the others. In the winter, we enjoy down hill skiing, snow-boarding and cross-country skiing. We also have snow shoe trips right out our back door. Spring, summer and fall the choices are endless. Regular fly-fishing and hiking occurs weekly. We also plan some overnight trips that involve canoeing, camping and backpacking. Rock climbing is a major activity that we enjoy every chance we get. This activity really teaches the students trust, teamwork and self-confidence. We have local access to offer this activity often, but also plan larger more dramatic trips in the wilderness. All activities are well earned and very much remembered. |
| Counseling: | Each student is treated as an individual. Upon their arrival they meet with our staff counselors and set a preliminary goal. The student then has two weeks to focus and identify the issues and actions that brought him to Bonneville Canyon. After reviewing this with our Director, they devise a long-term goal. Whether it be drug rehabilitation, educational goals, personal changes or all the above; the plan now becomes the goal of the staff at Bonneville Canyon as well. We will help guide the student and offer support for them to follow this plan. Daily encounters offer time for continuous confrontation on issues. If drug or alcohol use is a problem, the students work directly with our Counselors to develop a recovery plan. The student may attend NA/AA meetings offered locally or even seek counseling with a licensed Substance abuse counselor. Whatever level of support the student needs, we will do what is necessary. A student may also choose to engage in more intensive individual counseling with a Licensed Therapist, located outside our program. We work closely with a selected group of reliable and experienced professionals. This is an option that you may find necessary. If medication is currently being used, the student will need to maintain the proper dosage with regular office visits. |
| Campus: | Bonneville Canyon Retreat is located in Belfast, which is in the central MidCoastal region of Maine. The students are housed in a community type setting in a large Victorian farmhouse. We also have 90 acres of remote wilderness that is located on Waldo Mountain in Frankfort. The property gives us great opportunity for recreation and therapeutic activities. We are also planning the construction of a cabin and several tent platforms. The students are fully participating in all aspects of this process, and it will truly be a great learning experience |
