| Activities: | A New Perspective on Having Fun At the Birdseye Boys Ranch, a certified recreation therapist designs activities to foster self-confidence, problem solving, physical fitness, and community spirit. Designed to address individual youth's physical, emotional, and developmental needs, the recreational activities, which take place on and off campus, form an integral part of the treatment program at the BBR. The many, health-promoting, age-appropriate activities expose youth to new experiences, teach them how to have fun in positive contexts, and help them develop personal and interpersonal skills. Campus and Local Community Activities The BBR is located on 50 acres surrounded by federal forest lands, and, thus, hiking and outdoor education are available both on campus and in the nearby forest lands. As well, outdoor activities are accessible in the local area. Outdoor activities include fishing in lakes and streams, downhill skiing and snowboarding (at the Sundance Ski Resort), cross-country skiing, mountain biking, rock climbing, jogging, softball, flag football, soccer, basketball, volleyball, horse-back riding, and tennis. Indoor activities include board games, foosball, pool (on a full-sized table), Nintendo, weight lifting, drawing, painting, and crafts. The surrounding communities offer activities such as ice skating (in a new 2002 Winter Olympics venue), bowling, visiting local malls, and attending live theater and other cultural events. In addition, youth participate in community service activities throughout the year, such as visiting nursing homes and cleaning stretches of highway. Some youth choose to join in organized athletic competition with area teams. The Mountainland Athletic League organizes flag football, basketball, softball, volleyball, and soccer leagues for youth. The State is Our Playground The State of Utah offers incredible recreational opportunities. Each year youth spend a week in Escalante Grand Staircase National Monument and have a therapeutic wilderness experience. They also take part in a three-day, white-water trip that includes camping and fishing on the Green River at Flaming Gorge. As well, youth camp in the Uinta Mountains and the Manti-LaSal National Forest. The ranch owns a 22-foot Catalina sailboat, which the youth sail on nearby Utah lakes. They also enjoy Utah's grand outdoors by exploring ghost towns, hiking in deserts and mountains, and fishing in lakes and streams throughout the state. | Counseling: | A New Perspective on Identity For many years, the Birdseye Boys Ranch has successfully provided specialized clinical services to youth with sexual problems. The initial program was designed in 1989 by leaders in the field who developed the standards for most treatment programs in use throughout the U.S. today. Experience with hundreds of youth has resulted in enhancements in the BBR clinical program and reinforced a framework that has stood the test of time. Within the framework, individual treatment plans are created for each young man based on his unique situation. Treatment plans are reviewed weekly, and modifications are made according to the youths progress. Clinical Team All members of the clinical team are licensed psychotherapists with extensive experience with youth and extensive training in adolescent development and, specifically, in issues of sexuality and problematic sexual behavior. Each youth is assigned a psychotherapist and also benefits from a male and female team of therapists during group sessions. Treatment Focus Healing - Encouraging the youth first to examine the beliefs, feelings, and experiences that resulted in his problematic behavior, and, secondly, to resolve issues so that therapy can build on a solid foundation. Self-awareness - Enhancing the youths ability to discuss and monitor the thought, feelings, and behaviors that contributed to a pattern of harmful sexual behaviors. Bringing issues to light increases the youths ability to decrease and resist harmful sexual urges. Accountability - Empowering the youth to overcome denial and accept responsibility for behavior. Clarification - Assisting the youth in understanding the impact of his sexual behavior on others and clarifying his responsibility to those affected by his poor choices. Some youth engage in a process of restoration, which may include joint therapy sessions with victims. Empathy development - Increasing and enhancing awareness, sensitivity, and caring toward others, especially toward victims. Personal enrichment - Developing relationship boundaries, clarifying values, enhancing maturity, understanding human sexuality, managing anger, understanding grief, resolving substance abuse issues, and improving social and relationship skills. Relapse prevention planning - Developing techniques and coping strategies for managing harmful sexual impulses so that the youth is prepared to function safely and effectively in the BBR community and in a future, less structured community. Family involvement and support cultivation - Promoting the healing process in two family therapy sessions each month. These sessions are crucial in maintaining the youths progress during his stay at the ranch and after he leaves it. (Therapists and other staff are available evenings, weekends, and holidays for families who do not have a reasonable commute to the ranch.) |
| Campus: | The Birdseye Boys Ranch (BBR) is located in the rural, mountain community of Birdseye, approximately 30 miles south of Provo, Utah. The 50-acre ranch has a beautiful mountainous backdrop and an abundance of clean air, wildlife, and recreational opportunities. The surrounding area consists of land governed by the Division of Wildlife Resources, the Federal Bureau of Land Management, Manti-La Sal National Forest, and the Uinta National Forest. In the ranch setting, young men live outside the mainstream community and yet have access to community resources for medical, dental, and recreational services. The BBR is a community-based residential program, providing care and specialized treatment for youth ages 13 through 19 who have harmful or illegal sexual issues. The program is licensed and monitored by the State of Utah Department of Human Services. The program provides direct supervision with a one to three staff-to-youth ratio during the day and a one to five staff-to-youth ratio during sleeping hours. By holding youth accountable for controlling impulses and behavior and by emphasizing the need for treatment, the program offers youth the opportunity to develop a new perspective on relationships and achieve comprehensive rehabilitation. |
