Grades will be transferred from previous school experience, and students will be assimilated into classes. Summer school is offered as a way for students to get ahead or catch up on their graduation plan. Summer school is separated into three separate blocks, and classes will be tailored to the individual needs of the students. full range of classes are offered at Stillwater Academy, from English and math to art and physical education. Parents, students and teachers work together to create a graduation plan based on individual needs. If the student plans to graduate from Stillwater Academy, transfer credits will apply towards graduation. For students planning to return and graduate from their own high school, classes will be geared towards that school’s graduation requirements. Stillwater Academy does have a formal graduation ceremony for students. |
| Campus: | Students spend the bulk of their day on campus, 12 to 13 hours and then spend their evenings with host families in the evenings and on weekends. when a student first enters their program they will rotate host families for a period of time. This allows the child to aclimate to their program and allows the staff to become more familiar with the child and their needs, it also allows for a much more secure and safe environment for the youth during those hours when a student would be idle. |
| Family Involvement: | Parents play a key role in the pathway to recovery, because a parent’s love and support is a powerful motivator in the change process. Additionally, parents have the opportunity to learn and grow themselves in ways that benefit the child while in our program, and also aid parents immeasurably in helping their child stay on course once they have graduated. Turnabout’s program is based on the Family Systems Theory---challenges or improved circumstances within a family all have an impact on each family member. Thus, we believe healing a teenager is as much a family process as it is an individual one. Turnabout recognizes the importance of parental stewardship and the essential difference parental love makes in the motivation and ability to change and heal. Therefore, parents are asked to make a strong commitment to be involved in the treatment process of their teen. |
| Length of Stay: | 9 to 12 mos. |
| Philosophy: | Our goal is to provide youth with the curative experiences necessary to bring about a new attitude, rekindled hope, improved self-esteem and a renewed sense of commitment to themselves and their families. This change of heart occurs as youth actively choose to advance within Turnabout’s level system. When youth initially enter Turnabout, many privileges important in the lives of teenagers are withdrawn (communicating with friends, eating sweets, listening to their music, watching TV/movies, playing games, etc.) These privileges are earned back, and additional privileges and rewarding opportunities are earned, as youth make positive changes in attitudes, behaviors and therapeutic progress. When teens are required to put forth effort and work for things they want (many of which they may have previously taken for granted) they realize a sense of ownership, pride, self-worth and gratitude. This is the basic behavioral premise of the level system. Progress through the Turnabout level system is measured by accomplishing certain milestones and goals. Since progress for few people in life is a continual upward path, the level system allows for privileges and levels to be awarded for positive behaviors and growth, as well as lost for inappropriate attitudes and behavior. In this way, youth are able to identify their own progress and achievements as they work to overcome their personal challenges. They also learn that they are the ones responsible for their lives…that it is their choices that make their day enjoyable and rewarding or difficult and uncomfortable. Learning that they have the agency to make choices in life, but that those choices have consequences is a fundamental principle of our program. |
