| Description: | Gateway Academy is a residential treatment program that provides young men an accredited academic curriculum, an intense therapeutic environment and integrated recreational ventures. Located in Salt Lake City, Gateway Academy is a 16 bed Victorian home, intentionally small in size, so as to impact each young man on a rare and individual level. Young men, ages 15 - 17, struggling with unresolved trauma, ADHD, academic deficits, social withdrawal, impulsivity, diminished self-esteem, difficulties at home, peer group conflicts and other comparable difficulties, are mentored in personal, social and intellectual development. |

| Student Profile: | Gateway Academy is designed to serve underachieving boys, ages 15 - 17, struggling with: unresolved trauma academic deficits anxiety depressive symptology ADHD and impulsivity social withdrawal diminished self-esteem difficulties at home peer group conflicts other comparable difficulties Contraindication for admission includes youth who: present with imminently life threatening symptoms pose a danger to themselves, the program, to others, or to the community present with a history of chronic substance abuse without a recent intervening period of sobriety display active psychotic symptoms require extreme physical or medical needs Referrals are initially screened by the Admissions Director, Medical Director and clinical team. Candidacy for admission carefully considers all factors that indicate the youth’s greatest potential for success during and after participation. |
| Academics: | Academic Program Gateway Academy’s individualized educational program is structured to help each youth attain their academic potential. The academic program is designed for students that generally experience academic difficulties due to motivational challenges. These challenges may be attributed to learning differences, anxiety issues, emotional problems, chronic underachievement and absenteeism. The academic program is administered by Woodland Hills School and is accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges. Academic instruction is designed to: develop motivation overcome learning difficulties make up credit deficits access creativity create advanced learning opportunities Gateway Academy has certified teachers and a comprehensive educational curriculum. The curriculum emphasizes visual, hands-on kinesthetic learning as well as individual thinking and learning styles. The core academic curriculum includes: Mathematics Science Social Studies English Technology Physical Education and Health Foreign Languages Fine Arts Vocational Education Education is also provided in photography, computer graphics and small business skills based on the student’s interests and abilities. In order to address student diversity, the program is individually determined and paced, based on each student’s strengths and deficiencies. This includes Special Education Certified teachers whose lesson plans accommodate the learning needs of each student. It is the vision of Gateway Academy that each young man develops the skills for academic success, healthy decision-making, and increased self-confidence. |
| Activities: | Gateway Academy utilizes an integrated recreational and wilderness approach within our residential programming structure intended to provide a well-rounded growth experience for each young man--intellectually, emotionally, physically and spiritually. Gateway Academy’s Recreational Supervisor coordinates this inegrated structure through daily and weekend activities that take place on and off site. Daily physical education is provided through a variety of activities, including participation in a community recreational center as well as on-site basketball and other daily athletic activities. Monthly weekend wilderness expeditions are provided to reconnect youth to their positive wilderness gains. Additional recreational ventures include camping, back country hiking, skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, mountain climbing, mountain biking, water sports and other activities. Gateway Academy youth also enjoy participating in local cultural and education experiences. Off-site visits include museums, historical sites, National and State Parks, concerts, plays, festivals and sporting events. Additionally Gateway Academy also emphasizes community service with the youth through service and learning projects including community gardening, local river clean-up, feeding the homeless, Sub for Santa and other experiential community exercises. |
| Counseling: | Gateway Academy’s intensive treatment program helps each young man create for himself a life where he feels worthwhile, successful, connected and in control. Highly credentialed clinicians ensure the disciplines of academics, therapy and experiential activities are dynamically integrated. The treatment program includes individual, group and family therapy with a specialized clinical approach: Specialized Clinical Groups: Phase Group The Phase Group advocates self-exploration and insight into self-defeating thoughts and behaviors. Young men move through the phases at their own pace. As each youth progresses through the phases they learn to overcome maladaptive patterns and develop enhanced feelings of self worth and more productive, accountable behaviors. The Five Phase Process: 1) Orientation: Program Adjustment and Autobiography 2) Mapping: Self-exploration and Identification 3) Cairns: Insight into Personal Obstacles and Self-Defeating Patterns 4) The Path: Values Clarification and Relapse Prevention 5) Gateway: Application and Transition Personal Development and Trauma Resolution An intensive process-oriented group focuses on resolving trauma and enhancing each young man’s personal growth and development. Specifically, this group addresses: Identification and resolution of feelings of inadequacy, disappointment, educational barriers, family issues and trauma/abuse. Development of a healthy self-concept and personal goal setting Development of coping skills and healthy relationships Substance abuse counseling Choices: Relapse Prevention Group A task-oriented group focuses on identifying and understanding the thoughts, feelings and behaviors that are part of the youth’s personal obstacles and self-defeating patterns. Development of coping skills and relapse prevention strategies is also emphasized. Learning Groups: Young Adult Learning Group Combined academic and treatment experience focuses on learning adult roles and life skills, gender development, relationship and employment skills. Expectations Group A group held each morning focuses on reviewing, setting and understanding goals and expectations of the day. RAP Group A daily peer support group focuses on problem solving, conflict resolution, and team building. Individual and Family Therapy: Individual therapy sessions are conducted one to two times per week by a licensed clinician. To further opportunities for personal insight and growth, individual treatment is augmented by daily journaling. In order to effectively impact each young man on an individual basis, therapeutic intervention must include a comprehensive family component. When logistically possible, Gateway Academy clinicians conduct weekly family therapy sessions. When it is not possible for family therapy to be held on site, weekly therapeutic phone calls are conducted. Intensive family weekends are also facilitated by Gateway Academy’s treatment team. The weekend experience includes opportunities for parent-teacher conferences, individual family therapy, group family therapy and structured experiential group activities. Psychiatric Services: In addition to its licensed clinicians, Gateway Academy’s treatment team includes a Board Certified Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and Registered Nurse. When needed, our Psychiatrist conducts a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation and prescribes and monitors the youth’s medication management. Psychological Services: Peter M. Byrne, Ph.D., Gateway Academy’s Clinical Psychologist, will conduct psychological testing to identify barriers impeding each young man’s natural psychological and behavioral development. The psychological evaluation includes diagnosis of the nature and extent of learning disabilities that hinder academic achievement. Dr. Byrne’s psychological assessment information is also used to precisely guide treatment interventions tailored to the unique characteristics of each youth. |
