| Description: | Elk Creek offers two different programs which can be taken separately or in combination with one another: the Ranch Program, which focuses on horseback riding and ranch work and the Trek Program, which concentrates on extensive wilderness backpacking. Both programs are centered in and around Sunlight Valley. |
| Director Name: | Hap and Susan Ridgway |
| Student Profile: | teen age youth |
| Activities: | Mountain Cllmbing School and the Grand Teton Climb are offered in conjunction with the second session caravan. The Exum School of American Mountaineering offers a one-day beginning class. a one-day intermediate class. and finally. for those who qualify. a two-day ascent of the Grand Teton. We require that parents give their consent for the Teton climb. Glacier Skiing for those who love their skiing enough to walk, is available in the Beartooth Mountains just north of the ranch. We arrange two to three days of skiing during the first session. depending on the interest of the ranchers and the cooperation of the weather. (No additional charge.) Fishing of all sorts is available in the Sunlight country. The Ranch provides short afternoon and evening stream fishing trips with longer overnights to the lake country of the Beartooths. The Beartooth Trek offers extensive stream and lake fishing. (No Ranch charge but state fishing licenses are required. Season licenses are approximately $40.00. Five-day licenses are available.! The Work Crew is designed for boys and girls, 15 to 17 years old, interested in devoting additional time to more demanding ranch projects. Crew members can participate in all other Ranch activities. (Depending on the amount of time they devote to the work crew, crew members will be refunded from $40 to $75 a session.) Our Backpacking program (separate from the Treks) has become very popular in recent years, in part because of the proximity of large national wilderness areas. We start each session with short day and overnight trips. and climax each session with a challenging four-day trip. (No additional charge.) Elk Creek has a Counselor In-Tralning Program which allows four to six experienced Ranch or Trek Program participants to join our staff each year at a reduced tuition. We have been fortunate over the years to have a loyal cadre of personnel who have come up "through the ranks" in this program and, so, we have very rarely had to rely on outside people to assume leadership positions. |
| Campus: | Elk Creek Ranch is forty five miles from Cody, Wyoming, bound on the north by the Clarksfork Canyon and the Beartooth Mountains, on the west by Yellowstone National Park, on the south by the Northern Absaroka Mountains, and on the east by the Bighorn Basin, Sunlight Valley is the center of one of the truly spectacular scenic areas remaining in the continental United States. |
