Wellspring Adventure Camp reserves the right to remove any participant whose health or actions create a safety risk, impedes the operation of the camp, or puts at risk the safety of other campers. Wellspring is a safe environment. Violence and threats of violence are not tolerated and are cause for dismissal. Other dismissal offenses include the use of alcohol, tobacco and illegal use of drugs.
Student Profile: Overweight young women.
Activities:Cooking classes. Canoeing and kayaking. Water sports in the Olympic-sized indoor pool, or at the waterfront. Climbing in the indoor climbing room (with elements on the ceiling!), on outdoor climbing walls, or on the world-class ropes course, with 12 high elements (including zip lines) and 6 low elements. Basketball and volleyball in Paul Smith’s indoor gym, home of the U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association’s Paul Smith’s Bobcats. Fitness Video Games like “Dance Dance Revolution” and “Eye Toy” on the Sony Playstation. Tennis at Paul Smith’s tennis center. Weights and exercise machines at the fitness center. Individually-tailored fitness program. Soccer and other team sports on acres of athletic fields. Fishing on Lower St. Regis Lake. Many surprise and theme events and competitions. Walks in the woods, starting from the Adirondack Park Visitor Center (located on the Paul Smith’s campus), and perhaps arriving at one of the dozens of campgrounds within walking distance for an evening campfire. Poetry workshops about motivation, weight, eating and self-image.
Counseling:Cognitive-behavioral therapy sessions focus on developing a “healthy obsession” through stimulus control, decision counseling, rational emotive therapy, relapse prevention training, positive focusing, and stress management.
Campus: Campers will be housed in new college dormitories.
Length of Stay:Wellspring recognizes that 4 to 8 weeks spent at camp is a critical first step, not a complete solution. This is why Wellspring offers a comprehensive After-Care Program, involving families.
Financial Assistance:Although health insurers and HMOs will not currently cover the entire cost of Wellspring Camps, most insurers will cover part of the cost (up to $2,000 per 4-week session for cognitive-behavioral therapy and other therapeutic components). The entire cost of attending camp should be tax deductible for most families. On April 2, 2002, the IRS announced a new policy (IRS Ruling 202-19) stating that "Obesity is medically accepted to be a disease in its own right." For taxpayers, this means that treatment specifically for obesity can now be claimed as a medical deduction following a referral from a physician. Healthy Living Academies is pleased to offer parents financial assistance through Educational Loans. Educational Loans provides personal, hassle-free assistance throughout the loan process and is often able to secure full funding for enrollment.
Staff:Clinical Directors at Wellspring Camps are professional clinicians under the direct supervision of the Clinical Director of Healthy Living Academies, nationally renowned weight control expert Dr. Daniel Kirschenbaum.
Tuition/Costs: 4 -Weeks: $3,800.00. 8 -Weeks: $6,800.00.
Specialties:Wellspring Camps are summer programs operated by Healthy Living Academies. Healthy Living Academies is a division of Aspen Education.
