Academics:Upper School
With small classes (the average class size is 12), each girl receives individual attention and care. Minimester, a special two-week term, provides a chance to explore unusual topics, travel on study trips, take part in internships, or do independent research. Coordination with St. Christopher's, our brother school, offers the opportunity for coeducation in the Upper School and an unusually wide offering of classes.
Activities:Here’s an example of a typical school day: students have check-in at 7:55, chapel at 8:00, and classes until 10:10. Activities period begins at 10:10, which is a time for clubs and activities to meet, or for students to meet with their teachers or advisors. Classes resume at 10:45, and last until 3:30.

After school, students scatter to their after-school commitments: athletic practice, play or dance rehearsal, or community service. They may slip off to the darkroom or art studio to finish up a project, or to one of the computer labs to catch up on email or work on the yearbook or newspaper, while some students go up to the dormitory halls and relax.

At 5:45, boarders start heading off to dinner, along with day students who are staying on campus for an evening activity. Three evenings a week, students and faculty eat together for family-style meals, giving them a chance to get to know one another outside the classroom. Quiet hours are maintained from 7-9pm, and all boarders are checked onto their halls by 10pm.

St. Catherine’s is located two hours from Washington DC, one hour from historic Williamsburg, and 1.5 hours from Norfolk/Virginia Beach.

More than 60% of St. Catherine’s Upper School students participate in at least one of 20 varsity and junior varsity athletic teams. The Middle School has teams in basketball, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, and volleyball. In addition, Middle Schoolers are eligible to try out for the Upper School cross country, indoor track, spring track, and tennis teams.

WEEKEND LIFE
Weekends bring a whole new array of activities for boarders and day students. In addition to regular dinner, movie, and shopping trips, a student activities committee plans cultural and recreational outings in Richmond, Williamsburg, Washington, DC, and Norfolk. Mixers at other independent schools, ski trips, and musical and sporting events are also very popular. Closer to home, the library, computer lab, and art studio are open on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, and community volunteer opportunities are often available on weekends. (more)

Campus:St. Catherine's is located on 16 acres in the residential West End of Richmond, Virginia. In addition to our campus, we have 30 acres of athletic playing fields just 15 minutes away from campus in rural Goochland County. The campus’ Georgian-style buildings surround a central lawn, called the Green, which creates a unified atmosphere among all the grade levels and academic disciplines.
Length of Stay:stay the school year and can also stay summer session
Philosophy:St. Catherine's has been a part of the fabric of Richmond since 1890, yet our student body doesn't reflect the diversity of our city. We want that to change. Since 1997 one of the highest priorities for the school is to seek and enroll significantly more students of color by 2005. St. Catherine's has increased its students of color over the last six years, and now has 83 girls in grades JK-12, which represents 11% of the student body.

St. Catherine's believes that to serve our mission our students need to respect, appreciate and understand people from a variety of cultures, perspectives, religions and life experiences. Only when we can look around campus and see students and faculty from all races and backgrounds will we truly accomplish our mission of preparing young women for a life a productivity and service in a global community.

Our effort to embrace multiculturalism does not stop with enrollment numbers. Our school is engaged in a long-term movement to make multiculturalism part of the fabric of our institution. From curriculum review by division to the addition of a coordinator of multicultural and community services, there are more than 25 tangible efforts going on throughout the school. St. Catherine's Board of Governors is leading this charge by setting the direction for this effort and taking responsibility for St. Catherine's progress in this area.

Our vision at St. Catherine's is for diversity and multiculturalism to be infused into all areas of school life. This section of our website is set aside as a resource for people who what to examine this critical aspect of our school.
