Description:The Montcalm School, located in Van Wert, Ohio is a private and confidential therapeutic residential treatment program of Starr Commonwealth. Established in 1913, Starr Commonwealth is a pioneer and leader in child welfare practices and therapeutic treatment of troubled youth. Growth over the years, and a firm belief that all children have strengths and value, culminates in an internationally recognized treatment program. The Montcalm School is driven by a set of Core Values that promote integrity, excellence, compassion and faith and ultimately lead to the belief that “there is no such things as a bad child.”

Director Name:Mike Kitson
Enroll Info:60 beds
Student Profile:Montcalm School is ideal for young women who may be experiencing family conflict, are adopted, ADD/ADHD attention issues, attachment difficulties, narcissism, leaning disabilities/differences, passively non-compliant, oppositional behaviors, substance abuse, mild depression and other behavioral issues. Our young women may be lacking self-esteem, have poor body-image issues, may have feelings of abandonment, or may need additional support/help in developing social skills, all of which may have been unsuccessfully addressed in previous therapy settings.

Activities:Treatment at the Montcalm School is founded on the principles of PPC (Positive Peer Culture). this model integrates the power of interpersonal relationships, peer group treatment, and multidisciplinary teamwork. Daily therapy sessions foster and enable students the opportunity to develop self-awareness, care, assistance to others, and pro-social life skills. Empowerment classes are used to address self-limiting behaviors and attitudes. In addition, each student at the Montcalm School receives an asset-based behavioral and educational assessment upon entering the school. Parents, teachers, peers, and the treatment team determine the individualized course of treatment. Additional program experiences will include, outdoor adventure education, recreational therapy, body-image and self-esteem education, and a service learning program that promotes social interest and self-worth. Spiritual, grief and substance abuse counseling are also available. Montcalm School will also provide relapse prevention visits for those students who have departed the program.
Campus:Situated on a beautiful wooded site in northwest Ohio, Montcalm School for Girls provides a natural, healthy environment where a girl can take the time to find her way.
Family Involvement:Families are an integral part of the journey a student takes while at Montcalm School. Because we don't just change behavior, but improve lives, we make families part of the developmental process. Frequent parent contact - including regular visits, home visits when the child is ready, phone calls, letters and e-mails - are all a part of our program. Parents are welcome to contact the school staff at any time to discuss their child's progress.

Girls make weekly phone calls home and are encouraged to write frequent letters. Families, too, are urged to write to their children often to demonstrate their crucial care and concern. An e-mail address is provided for each child after arrival.

The Montcalm School staff can assist in developing transportation and lodging plans for families. When making weekend visits, guests are welcome to worship with us at a non-denominational Sunday chapel service
