Common characteristics of students who enter The Academy may include low scholastic performance despite high potential, anger and defiance toward parents and other authority, loss of interest in beneficial activities, moderate drug abuse, behavior which is damaging their chances for a great future, and decreased self-esteem. |

| Academics: | The mission of our educational approach is to assist our students in creating a successful educational experience by which an excellent scholastic record can be established, and through which our students have an opportunity to continue their education at the college or university level. Our academic structure challenges and supports our students' educational progress toward goals developed through discussions with the parents and their teen. Some students will be completing high school while enrolled at The Academy and others will graduate when they return home. Students who return home prior to completing their high school education may choose to continue with our educational system rather than returning to the negative influences of their previous high school. Our academic structure provides our students with the opportunity to resume their prior school course work and create a new and excellent scholastic record. The variety of courses which we provide assist each of our students to achieve their educational plans, whether technical, college prep or advanced placement/honors. GED Our study courses provide the best opportunity for our GED-bound students to pass the test and receive their general education degree. Technical/Practical Arts Technical and Practical Arts courses at The Academy provide both study courses and hands-on experience in AutoCAD, Land Surveying, Veterinarian Assistant Training, and Automotive Technology. College Preparatory Provides the full spectrum of courses needed for acceptance into the major universities and colleges in all 50 states. It also includes several major foreign languages. Advanced Placement and Honors Our Advanced Placement and Honors courses include Calculus, English and History. These courses prepare qualifying students to take the AP exams at a local high school in preparation for college. College Courses Through The Academy Numerous college-level and for-credit courses are offered through our Bridge campus from Oregon State University. These courses currently include mathematics, physics, history and many liberal arts courses. |
| Campus: | Our Bridge Campus is the centerpiece for the small town of Bridge, Oregon. Located along Oregon scenic Highway 42 between Roseburg and Myrtle Point, this campus consists of a complete school building and campus which was purchased from a local school district, and an adjacent blueberry farm. With hundreds of feet of frontage on the Coquille River and surrounded by thousands of acres of beautiful Douglas Fir forests, this location is perfectly isolated from the negative influences of large cities, yet close to necessary services including hospitals, entertainment, and shopping. Our Bridge campus students are immersed in education and activities available in such a setting, including swimming, hiking and camping. School work is conducted in the school building which contains several large classrooms, comfortable library, a large commercial kitchen and cafeteria, a huge gymnasium with full-court basketball, bleachers for 300+ people and a full performance stage. The school grounds include baseball diamonds, football field and soccer field. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our Coral Island Campus is located on the island of Viti Levu in the beautiful islands of the South Pacific. A South Pacific campus location was chosen because it can provide a powerful and positive experience for our students, and it is much easier for students to move from past negative behavior to new and positive behavior in an environment so different than that of home. Fijians are called "the happiest people on earth". Fiji boasts a 93% literacy rate, is the center for the University of the South Pacific, and is a direct flight from LAX. Our students work, study and play in a very Fijian environment, eat well, sleep well, work hard and play hard. As they earn the privileges of the higher levels in The Academy program, they are allowed to perform community service projects for neighboring villages and to participate in local sports. |
| Philosophy: | Our purpose is "Awakening Values Through Commitment and Achievement." We believe that teens who take committed action to create great lives through personal and academic achievement create greatness for themselves and within their relationships. We also believe that all teens possess these capabilities if they are awakened through emotional inspiration and academic challenge. Awakening these values is the mission of The Academy. Our program model arises from the concept that behavioral problems are the result of a conflict between our core identity; who we really are and the person we present to the outside world in order to feel "acceptable." The greater the conflict between these two entities, the greater the behavioral problems. Our therapeutic approach is to assist our students in resolving this conflict through identifying and honoring their core identity, and allowing this identity to be who they really are. Each of us possesses an unalterable core identity, distinct and unique from everyone else. This identity is trusting, loving, nurturing, honest, compassionate, creative, playful and committed. It is unaltered by events in life and represents a deep and fixed positive self-image. Our outer person, the one that we present to the outside world, is not necessarily representative of this core identity, particularly if we feel that the core identity is unacceptable, unworthy, wrong, or of little worth to the outside world. For those adolescents who have come to believe this, the conflict between who they really are (who they judge so harshly) and who they think they should be to be worthy, acceptable, and of higher value to the outside world, can cause serious problems in their relationships and in their own lives. Teens like this tend to find friends with similar self-loathing beliefs and behavior, experiment with drugs to alter their conscious and reduce their psychological pain, and move away from family activities and mainstream society. At times it seems to parents that nothing can be said which will raise the child's attitude toward himself. Even beneficial activities which once provided a sense of self-esteem are no longer attractive to these teens. Their core identity has been deeply buried by self-destructive beliefs and behaviors. I overheard one of these teens tell his father "...just forget about me and go on with your life." In early childhood and early adolescence, our experiences and environmental influences present us with a wide variety of information; some is positive and supportive, some is negative and degrading. Depending on the qualities and intensity of each, the timing of certain experiences and our own personal propensities, we may decide that this information represents "evidence" of worthlessness. Our choice in the matter is critical, and generally results in an attitude of high or low self-esteem. Some individuals take the "negative information" very seriously. In middle school, campus life with it's continuous barrage of judgment and categorization is stark contrast to the more compassionate and inclusive environment of the grade school years. Kids are teased for being short, tall, skinny, fat, nerds, jocks and worse. For teens whose history is to readily accept the negative information, this onslaught of judgment can push them far away from constructive activities and positive groups to the outer fringes of relationships where misery finds easy company. At this point in their lives most teens believe that they are the center of the universe and that every word, deed and thought is directed toward them. Those with the negative self-image take center stage with their self-loathing behavior. By the time these students have reached high school some begin to stabilize as they begin to realize that the information wasn't exactly accurate evidence of anything, particularly if they are supported by sports or other activities which naturally foster self-esteem. But many students continue their downward spiral; their grades continue to drop and their negative behavior escalates. They are vehemently resistant to positive coaching, and parents feel like they have tried everything and begin looking outward for assistance. Perhaps that's why you're reading this. The Academy stands committed to showing our students the decisions that they have made about that negative information. We provide each student with a variety of tools which open up an array of new choices to create new and better results. We support the positive results and work to extinct the negative behavior by eliminating the payoffs. By bringing honor and self-respect to their core identity our students' mental and physical health improves. Students who arrive slumping and depressed start smiling and standing tall. They report feeling happier and are proud of their accomplishment in school and in their school work. And they get homesick. Their self-esteem rises in direct proportion to their self-respect, and their committed stand creates committed action and they begin to move forward again. Because the old behaviors were learned and practiced over several years, it takes months to internalize these concepts and to practice the new relationship tools under a variety of circumstances similar to those which will present themselves after returning home. | Tuition/Costs: | Monthly tuition is $2,790 for the Coral Island Campus program and $3,280 for the Bridge Campus program, paid in advance at the first of each month your child is at The Academy. If your child arrives on campus on a day other than the first day of the month, the first month's tuition is equal to the number of days remaining in the month times $93.00 for the Coral Island Campus program and $109.33 for the Bridge Campus program. Last Month Deposit In addition to the first month's tuition, a deposit of $2,790 for the Coral Island Campus program and $3,280 for the Bridge Campus program, is due upon enrollment for payment of the last month's tuition. One-Time Enrollment Fee A one-time enrollment fee of $2,000 is required to pay for new student behavioral/educational processing and inter-campus departure/arrival processing. Student Allowance A monthly student allowance of $100 is required. This allowance covers incidental costs and is managed by the student with the oversight of staff. Student Uniform Deposit An initial student uniform deposit of $200 is to be paid on enrollment to cover the initial costs of the student's uniforms. Subsequent uniform purchases will be made as needed and billed to the parents. Inter-Campus Transportation Deposit An inter-campus transportation deposit of $1,800 is to be paid upon enrollment to cover the round-trip transportation costs for the student between the Bridge Campus and the Coral Island Campus. This is only for students enrolled in the Coral Island Campus program |
