Description:Our wilderness program helps at-risk youth, boys and girls ages 13 through 18, who are experiencing behavior and emotional problems related to depression, substance abuse, ADHD, bipolar disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, school failure, adoption, divorce, and negative peer and family relationships.
Director Name:Angie Senic
Enroll Info:Alldredge Wilderness Journey accepts students, ages 13 through 18, on a rolling admissions basis. We operate year-round and are licensed by the State of West Virginia. All applications submitted are reviewed by our Admissions Director and clinical staff to determine if candidate is appropriate for our program. Acceptance into the program is based on a comprehensive review of the student’s application, including a behavioral history (current and past), medical history, psychological testing (if applicable), and parent/guardian consultation.

Contact our Admissions Department at 888-468-1828 for more information. An admissions counselor is available to speak with you 24 hours a day.

Student Profile:Students at Alldredge come with many labels: unmotivated, adrift, troubled teen, at-risk, manipulative, difficult, entitled, delinquent, detached, drop out. They may be oppositional and defiant toward authority including parents, teachers, and the community. Many of our students may have common behavioral issues that surround youth today, including depression, anger management problems, negative peer relationships, poor impulse control, ODD (Oppositional Defiant Disorder), ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), ADHD (associated with hyperactivity). Still others may be experiencing issues of grief and loss associated with the death of a loved one, divorce, adoption, or other personal trauma. Many may be struggling academically, or may even have dropped out of high school, despite their talents and intelligence.

Alldredge admits adolescents experiencing any of the following detrimental behaviors:

Lying
Stealing
Truancy
Promiscuity
Cutting or self-injury
Anxiety
Depression
Bipolar disorder (under control with medication)
Substance abuse
Internet addiction
Game addiction

What are some of the behaviors that the program will not accept?
We do not accept students who are too destructive of property, self, or others. We seek students who can thrive in a decision-making environment without being restrained by locks and guards. We have comprehensive supervision, but we are not a “lock-up” program.

We do not accept students with psychosis, who are unable to discern between fantasy and reality. Because Alldredge employs a cognitively sophisticated model, a student’s cognitive ability will determine their fitness for the program as well.

Alldredge accepts students on medication. However, we do not prescribe medication, but we facilitate the continuation of previously prescribed medication.

Academics:Alldredge Wilderness Journey is licensed and certified through North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement. We understand and appreciate that students attending Alldredge Wilderness Journey have different academic and emotional needs. Many of our teens arrive at Alldredge with a history of poor school performance. Our teens are bright and capable, but may have fallen behind academically due to emotional and behavioral issues.

The Alldredge wilderness experience allows for students to earn academic credits while continuing to experience emotional growth in a purposeful and supportive therapeutic environment. During our two-phase wilderness program (58 days), teens have the opportunity to earn 4.5 academic credits. Options for academic credit are as follows:

Option I
All of our students who participate in the Wilderness and Village Phase will earn up to 4.5 credits. Courses include Creative Writing—.5 credit, CPR and First Aid—1.0 credit, Wilderness PE—.5 credit, Environmental Lab—.5 credit, World Culture—1.0 credit, Primitive Music—.5 credit, Primitive Art—.5 credit, and 40 hours of community service.

Option II
During the Village Phase, students will have the opportunity to work on credits in English or Math. They will spend 90 minutes per day, six days a week working on academics.

Option III, Village Phase:
Search and Rescue National Certification (NSAR)
Students have the option to be trained in Search and Rescue and become nationally certified. They will study and be instructed on national standards. In order to be certified, all students must pass the test. Students have four weeks to study and work on skills. A national SAR instructor will work with teens in this area.

Upon completion of Alldredge, some of our students will go on to therapeutic boarding schools, while others may be going home. It is our goal to provide the most comprehensive and effective programming to get our students prepared for the next step, whatever that may be. For our students who need additional time to work on academics and emotional growth, we have created the Extended Stay Phase at the Village.

Extended Stay Phase at the Village
After successful completion of the Village phase, students have the opportunity to transition into the Extended Stay Phase at the Village. Students continue to live in the Village, a community-based wilderness setting. Their academic programming is enhanced to include individualized academic planning and instruction, along with therapeutic activities and experiences to promote emotional growth. Length of stay is flexible and determined by student’s individual needs. During this phase, students are provided with the following resources:

Students work with educational tutors and life coaches to complete accredited online classes. Each student spends a total of five hours per day, five to six days a week in a variety of educational settings to include core classes and other experiential classes.
Individual therapy will continue twice a week. To provide consistency, a student’s therapist will remain the same throughout their entire stay at Alldredge.
Peer group counseling will occur twice per week.
Students participate in Art Therapy, Music Therapy, and Journeys.
Students will participate in exciting adventure activities, values-driven experiential activities, therapeutic drumming, and service projects.
Students may attend traditional recovery meetings as indicated.
Other opportunities may include equine therapy, humane society work, special projects with civic organizations, and much more.
Weekly phone calls are set up with parents and a therapist/counselor. Parents are updated weekly by our online portal system for grades and notes from our tutors.
Students must take a minimum of two courses in any subject area, and each course is worth .5 credits. Students will spend three to five hours per day, six days a week working on academics. The average student should be able to complete their course work within 30 days. The length of time depends on the student’s motivation and capability. Additional course work may be added as indicated.

Students can use the Extended Stay Phase to graduate from Alldredge Wilderness Journey; this track is for those students who only need a few credits to graduate from high school. They will receive their high-school diploma from Alldredge.

All fees for individualized academic tracks are separate and are options for parents and students to consider. There are no prorated fees for unfinished academic coursework and no refunds. All students are expected to continue service projects, daily chores, and therapy while in our program. All subjects are self-paced and are dependent on the students’ motivation and progress. Students who do not finish the online education can have their work transferred to any online system at home or school.

"Choosing The Right School" Report

About Us: Facilities.

Alldredge Academy

Location: Alldredge is located in the beautiful Canaan Valley of North Central West Virginia, the highest inhabited valley east of the Rocky Mountains. This secure location has 2 ski resorts and is a mecca for mountain biking, rafting, kayaking, cross country and down hill skiing.

The school is within a day’s drive for 2/3 of the U. S. population.
Specifically, Alldredge is 3.5 hours from Washington DC; 3 hours from Pittsburgh; 4 hours from Baltimore; and 4 hours from Richmond, VA.
Campus and Facilities: The Alldredge campus has 4 components, all within 25 minutes of one another.

Mountain Search and Rescue takes place during the warm months in mountains surrounding the Canaan Valley area. During the cold months, this phase is located primarily on private land in the milder climate at a lower elevation. The base operations, offices and facilities for staff are located on a 3 acre property in the small town of Davis just north of the Canaan Valley.
The mythical (rite of passage) village is located along a ˝ mile shore line at the confluence of 2 rivers.
The academic school campus is located high up on a mountain overlooking 40 miles of the Allegheny range. This campus includes dorms, classrooms, cafeteria, counselor offices, administration building, and art room. The campus is small, designed for 26 students. The 18 acre campus includes an orchard, grapes, domestic blueberries and a large garden area.
The family workshops are conducted at local resort facilities.

Family Involvement:Alldredge firmly believes that a successful outcome for students has much to do with family members being as actively involved in treatment as their son or daughter. Parents of a struggling teen attending Alldredge for any period of time must attend family workshops. Two workshops are provided for students and their families: one after the Search and Rescue experience and the second after the Village experience. Both workshops last three days and are one month apart to allow time to pass for calibrating progress and integrating changes.

The workshops are directed by Mike Beswick, LCSW, BCD, a nationally recognized family therapist who has facilitated thousands of workshops and has presented at conferences throughout the country. Parents invariably respond that the workshops were not only helpful for their teen, but life-changing experiences for the whole family.

The themes of the workshops focus on addressing and interrupting negative multi-generational patterns. This approach is both safe and supportive for the emerging student who will have to “walk the walk, not just talk the talk.”

Participants are engaged in various active processes rather than listening to lectures. Interventions are incisive without being combative or threatening.

Length of Stay:Generally, students are enrolled for 60 days, depending on needs and desired outcomes
Philosophy:We believe that all people, particularly adolescents, have a desire to fulfill an honorable and meaningful purpose in life, or in other words to leave tracks on the world.
We believe people can be connected to an honorable “higher power” or “power greater than self” of their own discovery.
We also believe that people need access to personal virtues (i.e. integrity, compassion, valor, etc.) to effectively fulfill their unique purposes in life.
Financial Assistance:Alldredge is committed to offering the best care possible at a price that is extremely cost-competitive. We do everything we can to help more families afford the quality services associated with a comprehensive program of this nature.
