| Description: | Hope Youth Ranch is a non-profit organization and the fulfillment of a vision. Our mission is to provide a safe, loving, structured, farm environment to troubled teens. We offer troubled youth an opportunity to mature spiritually, educationally, emotionally and physically. Residents are ages 8-17 from all ethnic and economic backgrounds. |
| Student Profile: | Hope youth Ranch provides services to male adolescents, ages eight to seventeen, who have mild to severe emotional, behavioral and/or family disturbances. More severe emotional psychiatric, delinquency problems may be considered, depending upon the child’s overall social and behavioral profile. Hope Youth Ranch is currently licensed to serve 78 male residents, ages 8-17, inclusive. Our primary focus is based on issues of neglect, abuse and abandonment. Hope Youth Ranch provides care to high risk or severe level adolescents. Criteria for placement is considered on a case by case basis. Mild to severe emotional behavioral and/or family disturbances are considered to be appropriate for placement. More severe emotional, psychotic, delinquency problems are also considered. Hope Youth Ranch also considers child characteristics exceptions such suicide attempts, fire-setting, sexual misconduct, and assaultive behaviors on a case by case basis for admission. |
| Academics: | Hope Youth Ranch offers educational opportunities working in cooperation with the Webster Parish School Board. The school formally known as the Evergreen School is located on Ranch property and is an important part of the Ranch life. Hope Youth Ranch Alternative Center is an accredited school supervised by the Webster Parish School Board. Four teachers and one paraprofessional are currently provided by the local school district and are directly responsible for all educational activities. In addition, HYR maintains and average of nine to ten staff on duty at the school to help supervise and tutor children as needed. The on-grounds school allows for increased levels of supervision from the direct care staff, administration, therapist and case managers. The availability of these key personnel allows for increased therapeutic intervention and assist the school staff in the daily instruction of activities. Vocational training is high on the list of priorities for improving opportunities for young men attending school at HYR. Fall of 2002 is the timetable set for the program to be up and running. HYR employees as master carpenter, with extensive experience in many other skills. In addition, a local licensed commercial nursery, landscape and lawn care company has contracted with HYR to from a cooperative to include teaching certain greenhouse and nursery activities. |
| Campus: | The Ranch is located on a 350-acre farm that raises Angus cattle, horses, hogs, and a variety of other animals such as lamas, miniature donkeys, goats, and other small animals. |
| Philosophy: | Our philosophy is that any child given an atmosphere of love and a climate that encourages and promotes spiritual development can work to become a productive member of society. The Ranch is founded on the principle that every child deserves an opportunity to live in a safe, secure environment. While our concerns extend to all youth experiencing and struggling through troubled times, our primary focus is bases on issues of neglect, abuse and abandonment. Hope Youth Ranch programs give young men a direction and purpose plus the encouragement to succeed. |
| Staff: | There is a great need for immediate and sound staff decision-making when dealing with children in crisis. Consequently, there must be a strong support group of parenting resources and a professional direct care staff. In each bunkhouse there are at least two awake staff on duty at all times. The interrelationship of resources and talents provided by our staff combines to meet the needs of each child and comprises our “family” in action. We promote structure, self-discipline, self-confidence and conscientious work habits. The Ranch is an ideal setting for young men to experience the reality of nature and “Farm Therapy.” Each child is assigned daily chores, including caring for farm animals and farm property. Hope Youth Ranch, Inc., is a 501 (3) C, nonprofit organization that is a fulfillment of a vision. Our mission is to provide a safe, living structured farm home to troubled and/or boys in need. A mixture of individual and group therapy, strong educational programs, a fully functional farm and opportunities for spiritual nurturing give young men a chance to achieve self-worth, a strong work ethic, and develop a sense of responsibility. |
