Student Profile:Our Students

Our students are 18 to 24 year old men and women looking for new direction.
The single trait they all share is that their lives have stalled and they are unsure of how to move forward. Many know the right answers but lack the maturity and skills to take the next step.

• They are doubtful of their abilities and talents and are often stuck in self sabotaging patterns of isolation.
• They are fearful.
• They are hungry for safety and success.
• They are confused.
• They are challenging.
• They show evidence of the ability to practice the skills and behaviors that lead them to independence and a clearer identity.
• They are ready and willing to grow up.
• They have made a decision to make a change in their lives.
Academics:All students participate in the Center+s Life Skills Class, and have the opportunity to enroll in college courses at North Idaho Community College. The staff also assists students with GED and high school completion

organizations

• Sporting Events

We offer two major travel experiences each year.

Alaska
This fully accredited college course culminates in a two week visit to a homestead in the furthest reaches of the Gates of the Arctic. It is required for all students and is a prerequisite to participate in the Europe class.

Europe
This class is a cultural and historical journey through Spain, Italy, France or England (destination varies each year); students apply to participate and are an integral part of the planning process.
Campus:Phase One is located in a beautiful rural setting in Bonners Ferry, Idaho. Our property is wooded and affords peaceful quiet yet quick access to town. 10 students live in a comfortable home sharing rooms and the responsibility of upkeep and chores. Men and women are on separate floors. Students cook their own meals sometimes choosing to plan group menus and meals. Behind the house sits the woodshop where various projects are designed and built by students. It is a step away from a fast paced world. It is a place to take a deep breath and regroup.

Students in Phase Two move to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, located about 75 miles south of the Bonners Ferry Campus. Their home is a typical college house with lots of rooms and separate apartments for men and women. Located in a neighborhood walking distance from downtown and the North Idaho College Campus, it is close to all the amenities of this beautiful lakeside city. Students do the routine cleaning and care of the house while maintaining school and work schedules. Students learn independence and life balance and take charge of their home and lives.

Family Involvement:Parents have weekly phone consultations with the Director and are encouraged to set and adhere to firm limits with their son or daughter. Regular contact with the student is allowed, and Family visits can also be arranged. There are four scheduled breaks per year.
Length of Stay:10 - 12 months
Philosophy:Our Mission

The purpose of Echo Springs Transition Study Center is to
empower young adults to live effective and productive lives.

This post-graduate program assists students in identifying their
interests and assessing their strengths and weaknesses.

It is a time to re-envision their dreams and learn that they can
accomplish realistic goals.

Echo Springs enables students to move from being passive
onlookers to active participants in their lives.
Financial Assistance:As a small program, we are unable to offer reduced fees. However, we do have lending groups and foundations that work with our families
Staff:Our Staff

Our staff is comprised of fifteen employees working with about twenty students on two campuses.

Our faculty ranges in age from late twenties to mid sixties. Between us we bring over 250 years of working with youth in educational settings. The talents, wisdom and skills acquired between us are shared daily with students in small group and one on one experiences. Guidance and direction are offered through classroom instruction, gardening, crafts, outdoor recreation, home economics, tutoring, job coaching, role modeling, and group process. Our academic backgrounds range from people pursuing their undergraduate degree to master’s level. Most of us have partners and children of our own. We understand the struggles of raising children in this society and time. We practice devotion in our community and our vocation. A balance of professional expertise, wisdom, life experience and passion for working with young adults is the key to our success.
