| Description: | Welcome to the Cedars Academy, a fully accredited residential boarding school for middle and high school aged boys and girls ages 11-18 who have been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Every student learns and reaches his or her full potential in our nurturing setting that quickly feels like home. The Academy is located on 73 beautiful rural acres on the Delmarva Peninsula in Delaware, only two hours from Washington D.C, Baltimore and Philadelphia. We are a small ADD - ADHD boarding school with a capacity of forty students who have non verbal learning disabilities or disorders. We offer a home-like setting, and our mission is to educate "the whole child." Because we believe that every moment of every day presents a teaching possibility, we live with and teach our students not only in the classroom, but at every opportunity — whether it's proper table manners, horseback riding, making a new friend, or solving a problem in trigonometry. We are a close community that feels like a family. The Cedars Academy boys and girls boarding school was founded 1989 by an educator who himself was labeled with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Currently, the Cedars Academy uses the most proven method of "academic enablers" to help students achieve academic success and attain social skills. The Cedars Academy has a traditional college preparatory curriculum specially designed for children with ADD - ADHD non-verbal learning disabilities and a student/teacher ratio of only 6:1. We understand and care about our students, and give them the skills they need to go on to college and successful careers. At Cedars, we're not just school - we're family! |
| Enroll Info: | The Cedars Academy enrolls students ages 11-18 with problems in focusing, sequencing, and organization and related educational concerns who have high potential that has not been realized. Parents may visit the campus of the boarding school in Delaware to discuss enrollment and to learn their role in changing the direction of their student's life. School records, a parental history, and an updated medical/dental form are necessary to complete admission and enrollment. We offer rolling admissions. New students are accepted throughout the year to our specialty boarding school for boys and girls with ADHD - ADD. |
| Student Profile: | STUDENT PROFILE The Cedars Academy is a private residential collage preparatory boarding school for children who have been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. We are a small close knit community with a capacity of only forty students. ADD or ADHD is a hereditary neurobehavioral disorder affecting about two to three percent of the population. It is treated with medication such as Ritalin and behavior modification. Most of our students are medicated only during the classroom part of their day. Boys and girls at the Cedars Academy usually have encountered learning disorders/attention difficulties in the classroom because of the way they process information. Our students may have problems making friends and adjusting to new situations and environments like a family vacation or class trip to the zoo. However, our students do not require psychiatric evaluation or therapy. Sometimes ADD or ADHD can look like psychiatric disorders such as Oppositional Defiant Disorder. Our school is not equipped for such students. Our coed student body is comprised of middle and high school students from across the United States and abroad, representing varied backgrounds and cultures. Our students are of average to above average intelligence, and some are intellectually gifted. As a result of the way they process information, they may have had social problems with family and peers because they may not understand social cues. For example, they may interrupt when others speak or blurt out answers aloud in class. They may not realize when they have frustrated a teacher to the limit because they do not have the skill of reading other people's body language. The Cedars Academy is a 24-hour educational environment where boys and girls are constantly taught in and outside their classrooms. We teach hygiene, if necessary, and intangible things like how to shake hands and use a polite tone of voice. We teach college level mathematics as well as table manners. Our students live in a homelike setting and work closely and individually with adult staff. |
| Academics: | We Education the "Whole Child" Each student is carefully assessed when he or she enters the Cedars Academy boys and girls boarding school for children with ADD - ADHD. Our students take the Stanford Achievement, Woodcock-Johnson, Brown ADD scale, and other tests to determine his or hers level of learning disability. We use these results to prepare Individual Education Plans (IEPs) for each student. Our plan not only includes academic goals but also social and interpersonal ones as well. We educate the "whole child." Our student/teacher ratio is only six to one, so that each student receives plenty of individual attention. Our ADD - ADHD students are required to take classes in American and world history and language arts including English grammar and composition, literature and theater. The Cedars Academy offers art, music and physical education as well as classes in foreign language. Mathematics courses range from pre-algebra through calculus. Science is stressed with courses in earth science, biology, physics, nutrition, and chemistry. Generally students take five academic courses, with adjunct classes in the arts, music, and foreign language. Each student's Individual Educational Program (IEP) is designed to move the student forward and to fill in holes in their academic and developmental background. Daily homework assignments augment classroom presentation and materials. At least 1-1/2 to 2 hours of supervised homework is scheduled daily. During the summer prior to and continuing through senior year of high school, students attend selected classes at the University of Delaware, Delaware State University, or Wesley College. This process helps them make a smooth transition to college, as well as pinpoints any areas that need further skill development before graduation. The Cedars Academy staff prepares students to take their SAT and other college board examinations, as well as guides them through the entire process of college selection and application. Our students take their College Boards without special time limits and after graduation, enroll in regular colleges and university programs. Among the colleges and universities of recent graduates are The Citadel, Elmira College, Hendricks, Jefferson Medical College, Moravian, Old Dominion, Salisbury University, Shepherd College, the University of Delaware, and West Virginia Wesley. We have computers that have special programs designed to help children with ADHD or ADD. These programs, such as Inspiration, offer templates and other organizational techniques specifically designed for students like ours. Our students have specific challenges such as needing to learn to focus and to control their distractibility. They often have a distorted sense of how much time they need or have left for a project. We teach them how to break down big projects such as "Write a term paper due at the end of the semester" into a series of small steps with deadlines. We understand some students' needs for frequent breaks and physical activity. The school year is divided into three semesters. The first semester runs from September through January; the second semester is from February through May; and the third semester is from June through August. The Academy breaks approximately every six weeks. Students receive three hours of homework each day during their breaks to provide real skill training in organization and independent work skills necessary for college. Students follow a schedule at home because it teaches the internal structure the students need, regardless of the environment. We are a year-round college preparatory boarding school with three semesters and three report cards are issued per year. Parent conferences are held as needed. A weekend parent training session is held in January. At the Cedars Academy, strong family involvement is important, and parents are an integral part of their child's total education and development. The program at the Cedars Academy is based upon our understanding of the nature of the learning problems of the students we enroll. We present a process-oriented method which places the same degree of responsibility on the teacher to develop successful teaching style as it places on the student to develop a successful learning style. Each student has an Individual Educational Plan (IEP) and implementation. |

Our food is very wholesome and varied, and sometimes includes foreign dishes. We eliminate highly processed foods and sugars for all students. Students help in food preparation and clean-up. We view meals a time to teach proper table manners, polite discussion and enjoyment of food. Evening Chores and Homework In the evening, our students complete between 1-1/2 to two hours of homework. We do not allow the students to "hang out" in their rooms but require them to do their homework and chores under staff supervision. Afternoon and Evening Activities These times of the day often include physical activities that stress the joy of participation and cooperative aspect of play. The students run at least thirty minutes every morning, and exercise outdoors in the afternoon. They swim in season. They horseback ride once a week and can choose to participate in a 5K Dover Days Race in May. We go camping as a group several times a year. Research in ADHD disorder has shown that outdoor activity and regular exercise help achieve higher levels of calmness and less hyperactivity, so we incorporate these things into our daily life. In the evenings after homework is finished, we might sit outside and listen to the waterfall of the fishpond. We may write letters or read a classic tale aloud to each other. Sometimes we play "Blob," a famous Cedars Academy game with no winners or losers, yet one that captures the excitement of being a kid. Many students both beginners and advanced players enjoy chess. There are opportunities to pursue individual interests such as playing a musical instrument or writing a letter home. Some of our students like to golf, others take dance lessons - at Cedars, students have a full choice of activities. Extracurricular Activities The staff at the Cedars Academy promotes group activities that provide opportunities to make and sustain friendships. Our students develop their resumes for college by actively participating in many activities. All our students have the opportunity to work on our school newsletter in English class, participate in art, drama and music, as well as sports and physical activities. Our students develop a sense of community awareness by volunteering at the local Humane Society, the local playhouse, and historical society. Weekend Activities The Cedars Academy keeps to a regular schedule all seven days. Our students thrive with regular schedules and routines for meals and homework every day of the week. Students attend classes on weekends, however, we are just like any other family in that we like to get away from home and experience new things. To break up the week, we go on field trips on Wednesdays or Thursdays. We take full advantage of the fact that we are only two hours away from Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, DC, and we take advantage of all the fun and culture that those big cities offer. We visit such diverse places as the Smithsonian Museum, the Holocaust Museum and the lovely area beaches. We also enjoy watching baseball games and other professional sports. We like to ice skate and play outdoors on our beautiful grounds. The Cedars Academy community takes a weeklong trip to various locations together late in the spring. |
| Campus: | FACILITIES AND HOUSING The Cedars Academy coed college preparatory boarding school is located on 73 beautiful rural acres on the Delmarva Peninsula in the state of Delaware. We take full advantage of the fact that we are only two hours from Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Philadelphia by enjoying the many cultural advantages and fun that those big cities offer. We consider ourselves part of our local community, and so we actively volunteer for local services like the Humane Society and community theater. There is a hospital and emergency-care facilities within seven miles of our Delaware campus. Our ADD - ADHD students enjoy an active outdoor life on our beautiful rural setting. They ride horses every week, swim in season and participate in plenty of active non-competitive sports. Students take a daily 30-minute morning run before breakfast. ACADEMIC FACILITIES Our students attend classes in the Annie Oakley Building, which has five classrooms. We teach in classes of six to eight students so that each child receives individual attention and achieves the goals of his or her Individual Learning Plan. Each classroom is equipped with computers that use special programs like Inspiration and Kurzweil 3000 and Kurzweil 1000 designed to help ADD and ADHD children organize their work. Kurzweil 3000 is widely recognized as the most comprehensive and integrated solution for addressing language and literacy difficulties. The software uses a multi-sensory approach – presenting printed or electronic text on the computer screen with added visual and audible accessibility. The product incorporates a host of dynamic features, including powerful decoding, study skills, writing and test-taking tools, all designed to adapt to each individual’s learning style and to encourage active learning. Kurzweil 1000 helps people with visual impairments access virtually any printed or electronic publication by making text audible. The product provides tools for searching, indexing, outlining, annotating, embossing, and creating documents or audio files. Kurzweil 1000 enables online access to books, magazines, encyclopedias and educational tools that promote more active reading by students as well as personal, home office and professional productivity. Kurzweil 1000 also shares information through e-mail, faxing, photocopying or outputting documents and audio files to portable devices. We have facilities for art, music and drama. OUR RESIDENCE/HOMES Our students live with faculty members in a homelike setting in one of two two-story houses: the Elizabeth Barrett Browning House or the Sacajewea House. One is co-ed and the other is an all-boys residence. Our homes have six bedrooms and four baths upstairs. Students share rooms with one to three other children who vary in age. We do not encourage students to stay in their rooms but rather to actively participate in social activities. For example, students complete their evening homework with staff supervision. Downstairs in each house is a kitchen, a dining room, a study with individual desks, and living room. The kitchen looks like a large kitchen in any private home. Likewise we eat family style around the large dining room table. Students help maintain their houses, just as they would help out at home. Our campus is set up as a homey, family-like atmosphere where children with ADD - ADHD can learn and thrive with a lot of individual attention from caring adults. |
| Family Involvement: | Cedars Academy is a place where your child can succeed and be appreciated in a home-like atmosphere that feels like a family. Cedars Academy is not just a boarding school for boys and girls with ADHD - ADD, but a nurturing setting where children can grow as unique individuals and accomplished learners. When our students graduate, they take with them the skills they've learned at Cedars Academy to thrive in college and succeed in their careers. We understand that parents may have tried all kinds of "cures" for ADD or ADHD problems, such as psychotherapy and herbal remedies and harsh discipline methods. But as our founder discovered, what works best is an all-inclusive caring environment designed completely for their needs. At our ADD - ADHD boarding school in Delaware, children grow and thrive, make lifelong friendships and become part of an active close knit community within a highly structured system uniquely designed for them. Our classes are designed with frequent breaks and more hands-on learning experiences to keep students from being becoming distracted, frustrated or bored. We take into consideration a child's unique style of learning. Regular outdoor exercise and wholesome foods alleviate hyperactivity and other symptoms. A daily predictable schedule with times for homework, chores, meals and play help our students stay focused and calm. But we at Cedars also recognize that our students need the love and support of family members. Parents must become an active part of their children's education. When students go home for their breaks, that time becomes a chance for them to practice what they learned at the Cedars special education boarding school and to do it without our support. It becomes necessary for parents to lovingly promote their child's new skills and tools. The Academy takes breaks every six weeks and at those times, the staff sends parents a packet of information about their child. We work together with parents to keep every student's progress on track. Students receive homework to do over their breaks. This homework will take about three hours per day, and is designed to keep the student on a regular academic routine. The packet may have information about suggested items that need to come back to school with the child after break. Parents also stay actively involved in their children's lives and education at the Cedars Academy through communication via telephone and letters from their children and emails from the Cedars faculty. Parents may request a conference at any time. Parents receive report cards twice a year and an annual detailed progress report. We have a parent training weekend in January at the Academy in Delaware. Parents can also stay connected with their child through Parent CheckIn. There is often a period of adjustment of about three to six weeks when a student first comes to live at the Cedars Academy boarding school in Delaware. The faculty and staff will work with parents to guide them in helping their child adjust to the new environment. If a student is used to playing video games and spending a lot of time watching television, or ignoring homework assignments or otherwise using up a lot of free time, the new rules and structure may come as a challenge at first. But most students learn to love boarding school and living in a close-knit community with their friends and teachers. It becomes easier for children to comply with routine and structure when they are in a group situation and everyone is "in the same boat." This approach eliminates power struggles.
