| Description: | LDI’s Mission … to inspire individuals to experience success while optimizing their potential for an enhanced quality of life in a challenging and supportive learning environment. The drive to find one’s way in the world is equally strong for those with learning disabilities than in any other person. Since 1982, the Life Development Institute (LDI) has been a beacon of hope for young adults who struggle with learning disabilities, attention deficit disorders and other related conditions. LDI, a 501(c)(3), nonprofit private organization based in Glendale, Arizona, provides a supportive residential community that gives individuals the education, skills and training they need to live independently. By offering our programs in a residential environment, we give students a chance to learn independence, and instill in them a desire to succeed. LDI can help individuals through each level of their transition to independence– from earning their high school and post secondary diplomas to achieving careers that will utilize their unique capabilities. Recognized nationally as an exemplary literacy program for those with learning disabilities, LDI received the coveted Points of Light Award (one of 21 selected from 4,500 nominated) presented by President and Mrs. Bush in 1992. Congratulations to Life Development for winning the Woodbuy Reports, Inc. "Excellence in Education Award." Recipients are selected on the basis of their excellent reputation for producing positive and consistent results with at-risk children and their families |

| Academics: | HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM LDI’s ACADEMY OF LIFELONG LEARNING (ALL) is a two-year residential or day high school program that provides a structured, portfolio-based curriculum that focuses on development and growth in literacy, independent living skills, career development and college or other post secondary placement. The Academy is an approved private special education school through the Arizona Department of Education and Exceptional Student Services with diploma granting authority. Our classes are small – ranging from five to ten students – and provide the instruction students need to complete their high school course requirements for graduation. Students 16 and older can participate in the day high school program. Students 18 to 21 years of age can participate in the residential setting. POSTSECONDARY PROGRAMS LDI offers three postsecondary program tracks of two years or longer for students who are high school graduates. There are also services and support available for students continuing beyond the core LDI programs. Postsecondary programs normally require LDI residency in its master leased apartments, and all new students are usually advised to participate in this residential option. Postsecondary programs include: • College Track – the College Track offers both credit and non-credit college-level courses to students who want to complete associate degree requirements, build academic competency to college proficiency level, or graduate to four-year colleges or universities. LDI support in collaboration with disability services, faculty, and staff on campuses allows each student to have an equal opportunity to fully participate in all aspects of the educational environment. These services assist students to promote self advocacy and to successfully complete their college program. All college courses are approved and accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. LDI staff and students work together during their time in college to create a successful experience, and team work is what makes this transition optimal for the student. • Career Track – The Career Track emphasizes occupation-specific education and training from Phoenix-area technical, business, and medical schools. LDI provides support-related services, program advisement, mentoring and liaison/tracking with the other programs. Most of these schools offer or require externship placement with local employers prior to granting diplomas or certification to graduates. Prior to student placement in a career track, they first participate in extensive career exploration classes and investigate and explore with staff to help them make informed decisions based on their interests, abilities, aptitudes, and experiences. Students feel empowered, and responsible for their decisions. • Employment Track – The Employment Track provides students with documented work experience that compliments their educational career. Employers have the opportunity to hire students with meaningful real-world work experience. The Employment track introduces students to the work environment and teaches workplace skills. Students complete inventories, assessments, job shadows, and practice work skills on and off campus through work experiences, volunteer work, and career transition. This unique program works closely with students to ensure that not only is the employer aware of any needs, but the students are aware of how to advocate for themselves and how to seek assistance from LDI if things become difficult at any time. LDI is always working behind the scences in a respectful and invisible manner so students maintain dignity and autonomy. LDI assists in placing individuals in employment that is appropriate to individual capabilities and employer qualifications. Care is given to establish appropriate workplace accommodations, including on going tracking and job mentoring. • Independent Living Program and Extension Services – LDI offers advanced course work and supportive advisement for students completing college or occupational-specific programs as well as individuals establishing work stability and job retention. Students are encouraged to move into an apartment that is not under the LDI master lease. Students begin to assume primary financial responsibility for overhead and living expenses as their income permits. Participation in Personal Leadership courses develops a sense of community involvement and individual identity. • Extension Services Track – This program offers continued support services in a variety of areas for individuals who choose to remain at LDI after completing the formal programs. The purpose of this program is to allow individuals to maintain several aspects of the program, such as continued educational support, workplace, and/or general continuation of learning in the independent living and social support environment. Many individuals may be pursuing college degree’s, securing themselves in their careers, and/or learning how to apply the skills they have obtained in the formal classes at LDI. Many students feel they need more time to work with their advisors and other staff to lay foundation in their community, educational institutions, workplaces, or in finding how they fit into the adult world. The adult extension services offer a fully integrated program utilizing independence while continuing individualized support. Students will experience the security of knowing a supportive staff throughout each transition and endeavor they encounter. All programs include a large variety of extracurricular activities that are offered in the evenings and on weekends. For a gallery of photos highlighting some of these activities, click here. |
| Campus: | Residential living and services are integral to each individual’s success. Within walking distance of LDI classrooms and offices, a comfortable apartment complex allows residents to live with a degree of independence, with access to assistance when they need it. We refer to it as supportive rather than supervised. Apartment management hosts complimentary weekend breakfasts, weekly movie nights, and monthly theme parties for residents. The LDI facility is located in Glendale, Arizona, a community with a population of 225,000 and a diversified economic base that can provide on-the-job training and employment opportunities for our students. We are also located within walking distance of a large regional shopping mall and other retail centers. Virtually any professional training, baccalaureate, graduate or post-graduate program can be pursed within close proximity to the LDI campus. Within Glendale, there are four institutions of higher learning, from community colleges and technical training academies to state universities and graduate schools. |
| Staff: | LDI faculty and staff believe their job is to help individuals believe in themselves. They show them how to find success for themselves. The role of our faculty and staff is to help LDI students develop strategies for problem solving and recognize their unique capabilities and capacity for personal accomplishment |
