Participation in a structured academic environment plays an important role in the developmental needs of an adolescent. Our faculty believes that students can learn, achieve and be responsible when they are active participants in a dynamic therapeutic community that promotes excellence in treatment, academics, and social learning. The objective of the educational staff at Timberline Knolls is to nurture, sustain, and enhance the academic performance of our students. This is accomplished through the Academy’s three-part program of individualized/group therapy, residential/lodge living, and education. In order to facilitate this successful program, our educational team utilizes a multi-disciplinary approach in the education, treatment, and supervision of our students.

The educational team is led by our principal a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, with Type 75 Administrative Certification and Type 73 School Social Worker certification. Our masters level teachers are certified and trained as Learning Behavioral Specialists. In addition to these highly qualified educators, we provide certified Specialized Classroom Counselors in each classroom. This dynamic combination affords our students the opportunity to achieve their highest emotional, social, and academic potential.

Timberline Knolls Academy is centrally located on campus adjacent to two residential lodges. This academic setting aligns with the beautiful outdoors for integrative learning opportunities. The Academy is an Illinois State Board of Education approved residential school. We follow a quarter-based academic calendar and offer a six-week summer school program in accordance with the Illinois State Board of Education Learning Standards.

Through the use of state-of-the-art assessments, an individual plan is developed. The plan takes into consideration the student’s present level of achievement, ability to learn, and the requirements of the student’s home school district. When appropriate, elective subjects, advanced placement courses, ACT/SAT preparation, and on-line courses will be offered as part of the total curriculum. In order to support the Academy’s therapeutic and academic curricula, the students have access to superlative tutorial resources that further enhance their academic and artistic skills.

The intensive treatment programs at Timberline Knolls are premised on individualized and dynamic treatment plans developed for each resident and delivered in the context of treatment protocols expressing evidence-based, best clinical practices. All clinical services are rigorously and constantly evaluated for outcomes leading to appropriate changes in individual treatment plans as may be indicated.

A hallmark of the therapeutic programs at Timberline Knolls is the focus on identifying, engaging, and maximizing each resident’s inherent strengths, and supporting the resident in overcoming and relinquishing negative and destructive patterns of thought and behavior. Various therapeutic techniques are employed, such as the 12 Step Program and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, to enable the resident to make positive choices which lead to improved sense of self, socialization skills, and positive behavior.

The explicit goal of Timberline Knolls is to make each resident’s stay their last at a residential therapeutic or acute facility. This can only be accomplished through intensive, individualized, highest quality, and proven treatment intervention. It is to the delivery of such care that Timberline Knolls is dedicated.

Our campus is located just a few miles southwest of Chicago, and less than a half-hour’s drive from either O’Hare or Midway Airports. We are situated on a heavily wooded historic 43-acre site, with four separate, very attractive 28 bed lodges, nestled between reflecting ponds, tall pines, and beautiful limestone formations.

The Family Treatment Program is an integral component of care. When appropriate, all family members including siblings, may participate in family therapy which includes strengthening parental leadership, clarifying boundaries, enhancing coping skills, and freeing family members from their entrenched positions within the family structure. The family program consists of sessions designed to help families cope through multi-therapy group and individual therapy sessions.
