Nestled on a 1,800-acre campus in beautiful Northern New Hampshire, The Oliverian School provides an inspiring, supportive, and challenging educational alternative for students in grades 9-12. Here in the mountains of New Hampshire, in a unique school environment that combines stewardship, academics, a caring culture, and adventure, students who march to the beat of their own drummer will find support, inspiration, and success. We're confident that students who have struggled in more traditional academic environments will find the right blend of challenge and understanding at Oliverian. The Oliverian School offers rolling admissions.
At The Oliverian School we try to define our students by who they are, rather than by who they are not. That said, we know in the placement process it is important to clearly define the kind of student we know will succeed at Oliverian. Oliverian students typically come from all over the country and from a variety of different circumstances and traditions. The school aims to serve students who are academically capable of serious work and aspire to a college education, but who are not succeeding or have not found success in traditionally structured schools. A student with minimal learning difficulties will find success at Oliverian. Given our size, faculty can focus on the kind of 1:1 relationship that carefully paces each student, while being consistently supportive and challenging.
A student comes to Oliverian knowing they are coming to change their lives. They are imaginative and self-aware, and are struggling with a variety of adolescent and maturational issues. At the same time, they have become disillusioned with larger and more unreceptive schools. A student typically arrives at Oliverian with a desire to grow academically, psychologically, emotionally and socially. Concurrently, they are anxious and apprehensive about the challenge of honest self-assessment, as they grapple with learning to see the good in themselves, while continuing the process of self-improvement. Diverse, motivating and thought-provoking offerings at Oliverian afford possibilities for each student to build competency and character in a secure and healthy school setting. We expect each of our students to graduate feeling self-assured about the next phase of their life, and with a clearer sense of who they are and how they relate to the world around them.
The Oliverian School offers a college preparatory curriculum that has been designed following consideration of the special strengths and needs of our students, many of whom are nontraditional learners. Our course of studies addresses core needs in the areas of science, language arts, mathematics, social studies and foreign language. In order to teach students other skills needed to succeed in the business of life, we also have requirements in the areas of stewardship, experiential education, health and physical education, and the Fine Arts.
Graduating students are expected to complete a comprehensive senior project. Advanced credit is offered and encouraged for students who have special subject area strengths.
The Oliverian School has a diverse and talented faculty, and emphasizes ongoing faculty growth highlighted by our professional development partnership with the nationally recognized Center for School Success.
Adventure at the Oliverian School
It is our belief that adventure education is a powerful way to accomplish objectives and encourage student growth in three main areas: the development of awareness and efficacy within one’s self combined with the ability to negotiate shared values and set goals among peers, the achievement of deep academic understanding and a capacity for reflective learning, as well as a passion for life-long fitness.
A Caring Culture
School culture is a critical component of life at the Oliverian School, because we know the culture of a school speaks as much about the quality of the educational experience as the academic program. To that end we strive for coherence in our approaches to both school culture and academic inquiry. We have chosen the term “a caring culture” to describe the overall Oliverian experience. A caring culture encourages students to reflect on how they relate to one another and to the natural world, while also focusing on the community around them.
To be a member of a caring culture requires a commitment to self-discovery as a fully participating community member. A caring culture invites students to exhibit a range of expressions, and then to learn how their expressions and actions affect the other members of an actively diverse community.
We take time for mutual inquiry to examine and question during this process, providing challenges and opportunities to learn. Over time, common practices, rituals, and interactions create the cultural underpinnings that resonate throughout the community.

Our mission is to educate students, who, despite experiencing difficulties, want to transition to a college preparatory setting where they are inspired and supported as they prepare to succeed in a complex, intricate and ever-changing world. We promote and support a "zest for living" by encouraging self-exploration, spirituality, character formation and integrity, as our students learn to balance their individual needs with those of the community.
