For over a century, young men have found the route to college taking them first to a preparatory school in a small town in the countryside of Central Virginia. The town is Fork Union, near historic Charlottesville. The school is Fork Union Military Academy.

The young men come from near and far and from all stations in life. They are a wide range of races, religions, talents and abilities. What they have in common is the desire to go to college one day, and parents and relatives who want them to have the education it takes to get there.

Young men, from around the country and the world, choose a Fork Union Military Academy education. Admission to the Academy is based on a student's application, two teacher recommendation forms, a character evaluation form, and the Academy personnel's contact with the prospective cadet

Fork Union Military Academy is fully accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools, and is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools, and the Association of Military Colleges and Schools of the United States.

Fork Union Military Academy is well known and respected for its athletic program. FUMA has a stellar athletic department, outstanding coaches, state-of-the-art facilities, and talented athletes.

Fine Arts at Fork Union is in demand throughout Virginia.

The FUMA Band represents more than 10% of the Academy population and was started by student Reton Edgerton in 1934. The Band now travels into surrounding communities performing in Parades and ceremonies on request.

Choral studies include the Cadet Choir and Chorale led by CPT Bruce A. Patterson. Both ensembles perform a variety of musical styles and act as Ambassadors for the academy at area churches, schools and community functions.

The Drama department performs for the cadet corps numerous times during the year and enhances cadet life through humor and excellent acting and is led by Beth Sherk.

The crown jewel of the Academy, the bagpipes were started in 1998 by cadet Mitch Slife. The program now boasts 6 pipers and 8 cadets working on the chanter in hopes of becoming a piper.

Fork Union Military Academy Musical Ensembles have received national recognition. In 1999, the band performed for the National Ground Intelligence Center groundbreaking ceremony in Charlottesville, VA. In 1998, the FUMA chorale had the honor of performing for the National Missing Children's Day ceremony for the United States Department of Justice with special guest United States Attorney General

Private music lessons are taught by music educators from the local area who have specific expertise on the instruments taught. These lessons are scheduled on an individual basis and are arranged by the Bandmaster as requested. Every effort is made to schedule lesson time to avoid conflicts with afternoon and evening activities.

Private instruction is available on flute, clarinet, alto saxaphone, tenor saxaphone, baritone saxaphone, horn, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba, percussion, piano, and guitar.

If a student is unable to attend a lesson, it is that student's responsibility to notify the bandmaster at least 24 hours before the scheduled lesson. Failure to do so will result in the student being charged for the lesson.

Students will be charged for the entire semester before instruction begins. At each lesson, the student will sign a record sheet indicating the topics covered in the lesson, the scheduled starting and ending times, and the actual time the student arrived for the lesson. Missed lessons will be noted as a no-show. A copy of this record will be made available to parents at the end of each semester upon request.

The mission of Fork Union Military Academy is to provide young men a college preparatory education in a residential, Christian environment. Using the best aspects of the military system, the Academy teaches its cadets responsibility, leadership, discipline, and pride by providing an atmosphere in which spiritual, mental, and physical growth can flourish.
