Tranquility Bay provides an effective program for teens who are struggling in their home, school, or community. This Program is specifically designed to help teens replace inappropriate attitudes, behaviors, and habits with new, productive ones. Tranquility Bay is located at a remote beach facility along the south coast of the island.
The benefits of a foreign site are numerous. First, the students are put into an entirely new environment, far away from the negative friends and influences that have adversely affected their lives. Second, the teens discover that they are in an unfamiliar culture. As a result, the teens tend to be much more teachable and open to change and direction. Third, a foreign experience helps broaden the teen's insight, awareness and perspective. Fourth, a foreign setting is much more impacting and instills a greater appreciation for home and family. Fifth, not only do the teens get the help they need, but a valuable overseas experience that they will likely remember and appreciate the rest of their lives. Additionally, due to the greater value of the U.S. dollar in Jamaica, the Program can provide its services at a significant reduction of cost to families. All of these reasons make Jamaica an excellent option for teens needing to make changes in their lives.
The Program consists of several key components: effective behavior modification, a series of highly motivational "emotional growth seminars" called TASKS, progressive academic curriculum, a structured daily schedule that includes daily personal development courses.
We typically have the best success with children who are behavior problems. Children who are not getting along well with their families, those who gravitate toward a negative peer group, and those who generally do not want to adhere to the family rules and structure. We also deal well with children who are struggling academically.
The Tranquility Bay academic program offers its students a unique opportunity to work at their own pace. Students work independently to earn credits toward High School Graduation. The program is designed to allow students to catch up if needed, work for early graduation or maintain a normal pace.
Teachers employ a variety of methods to address the individual needs and special qualities of our students. The structured learning environment at our school allow students to acquire the skill necessary to succeed academically and socially at Tranquility Bay and throughout their life.
Upon entering the Tranquility Bay academic program each student is given a student education plan. Teachers and students work as a team in setting and completing the goals and steps needed to complete the credits on the students' plan. Students are taught to account for their own performance and progress. Students also acquire independent study skills as well as improve their comprehension skills.
Tranquility Bay is accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools, Universities and Colleges. Tranquility Bay is also a registered independent school with Jamaica's Ministry of Education, Youth and Culture.
Several activities are planned for students to enrich their Jamaican experience.
Students visit local schools and assist teachers for the day. Students also assist two local community groups with projects (Treasure Beach Women's Group and The Breds Foundation).
Students make valuable connections with theory and practice during educational tours. They visit bakeries, manufacturers, farms, and other agricultural enterprises.
Each year the department plans at least 4 major activities. Each family teacher is also required to plan competitions in their classrooms (one each quarter).
The begins with our Debating Competition followed by our annual Fun Day in April. Our Annual Careers Expo and the Science/Art Fair take the spotlight for the middle of the year. Quiz Bowl and Spelling Bee competitions end the year of activities. The Math and Social Studies departments are also required to plan an activity for the year.
Couseling is not provided: High standards exist. Inappropriate behavior is confronted, consequented and redirected. Appropriate behavior is reinforced and rewarded. A merit system is used requiring each teen to earn their status and privileges through a standard program using a level system
Daily Personal Development and Emotional Growth Courses are an important part of the overall program.
These courses intermittently utilize effective resources such as: educational and inspiring audio & video tapes, selective reading material, special workshops, and group feedback sessions
Just a few hundred miles from the Southeast tip of the United States is the friendly Caribbean island of Jamaica. Thousands of U.S. citizens visit Jamaica each week to enjoy the sunny beaches, the beautiful scenery, the congenial hospitality, and the relaxed tranquility of this tropical island.
Jamaica is an excellent location for the Program because it offers the benefits of a foreign site yet is still close to the United States with easy access for any needed U.S. services or technology. At Tranquility Bay, students are enriched and effectively impacted by a unique cultural experience in Jamaica's warm yet humble and modest surroundings
